Things being on the up

Things, as the title might suggest, seem to be on the up.

My sister moved into the flat yesterday where I have been living with a mad spoilt racist for 6 months. Now the racist is gone. It's a breath of sweet liberal air to no longer have to explain things like the vital role of immigrants in the British economy over breakfast. Instead we can just talk about toast.

The housewarming we had yesterday unfortunately was more of a house-breaking, and my self assembly skills (or lack thereof) were exposed as two chairs and a sofa all imploded. But I'm sure it's nothing a tube of superglue won't fix.

Louise also sat me down and made me write out a plan for the next 18 months so life gets a bit less aimless. Stuff to look forward to: Doing a politics A-Level, going to France, moving in with friends...

And (and!) I have gone from the pathetic and frankly ludicrous position of being seemingly unemployable (having been turned down for the last 15 jobs I applied for - even selling socks) it now looks, tentatively, like I might have secured two. Maybe. Hopefully. Let's all cross our fingers because the long-distance relationship travelling fund (all my money in the whole world) is now down to its last tragic pennies.

And and and I discovered the best greasy spoon ever, right on my doorstep. Crawled there this morning with Lou and her boyfriend for fried egg sandwiches to soothe the lingering effects of last nights revelry. Mmm. Revelry. And sandwiches.

So.

I started college this week. I have yet to come to any conclusions. Although whenever I'm not sure how I feel, I tend to use my thumb (and raggedynes thereof) as a barometer. And I have to be honest, it's not looking good. The two chewed patches (one either side of the nail) have met in the middle. Uh oh.

I was very spoilt at St Paul's by only having intelligent interesting people around. I freely admit that I'm a brain snob, so turning up at St Martin's to realise that the clever ones are going to be an extreme minority was a little disappointing.

I am also very bad at meeting new groups. Well, I am very good for about five minutes but then I accidentally say things like "I hate you" and don't know how to retrace my steps.

Yeaches. On the plus side, I spent a lot of this afternoon hopping on and off busses for the first project they set. How I love busses. Mmm. I really hope the routemasters are still running in November when Erick visits. They're phasing the routemasters out. Which is a crying shame.

And now, to pastures new. Or at least upstairs.

Ah!

My mustard preferences (type of, amount of) just made my eyes water so much that I cried.
Note to self: never go so long without wholegrain mustard (known to all you coffeeshop types as spicy mustard) again.

Ps. Isn't it nice when you come home from some concerted dancing/drinking to find a whole roast chicken in the fridge? I just think that's so considerate on behalf of the roast chicken buyer (considering said roast chicken buyer is tee-total so would not understand the urgent need for roast chicken at such a moment.)

Buying my own food is going to suck.

When I woke up this morning, I found out that Erick has bought his ticket to come and see me in November...
That I was having scrambled eggs with mushrooms and spinach for breakfast... (Well, I didn't so much discover this as decide)...
And that the sun was shining.

Today I am relegating glumness to the bottom of my dressing up box.

Finally, the real purpose of livejournal has become clear to me.

It is the kindest forum for sharing my dreams. In that noone has to read them if they don't want to. So.

I had the weirdest dream...

About a seige in an airport with elements of the War of the Buttons and Lord of the Flies in that it involved a lot of teeneagers. But it was somewhat more brutal than War of the Buttons, with more actual weapons and real threatened death. But the teenage power struggles and pettinesses were still in full force.

The bit that stays with me most clearly is an image of a large wound in a boy's leg being packed with flowers as a dressing.

Right, on with the day...

1. ONE OF YOUR SCARS, HOW DID YOU GET IT?
Lots of cigarette burns (and I don't even smoke, sigh.) There is a scar from an alien abduction on my left shoulder.

2. WHAT IS ON THE WALLS IN YOUR BEDROOM?
Lots of things... black and white postcards, a lino print of george harrison, icons and postcards of the virgin and child, a misfortune cookie paper that says "your kindred spirit is vodka"

3. WHAT DOES YOUR CELL PHONE LOOK LIKE?
It's... rectangular, with buttons and a screen.

4. WHAT MUSIC DO YOU LIKE TO LISTEN TO?
Lots of. 60's pop. Twee pop. Sad bastard music. Slewpy music. Sometimes even dancing music.

5. DO YOU KNOW WHAT TIME YOU WERE BORN?
In the middle of the night. I pissed my sister off because she had to wake up.

6. WHAT DO YOU WANT MORE THAN ANYTHING RIGHT NOW?
Someone to pick up the phone. And my tummy to stop hurting.

7. WHAT DO YOU MISS AT TIMES?
Someone scratching my back and holding my hand. Routine of breaks at school.

8. WHAT IS YOUR MOST PRIZED POSSESSION?
Probably my wardrobe. Contents of, rather than wardrobe itself. How sad. And my art books. Hmm. Maybe my sketchbooks. I don't know.

9. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SMELL?
Coffee.

10. DO YOU GET CLAUSTROPHOBIC?
Yes, but only if there are other people in the small space.

11. IF YOU DIED TOMORROW:
Oh well.

12. THE LAST PERSON TO MAKE YOU CRY?
Myself.

13. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE COLOGNE / PERFUME?
Anything that smells like vanilla.

14. WHAT KIND OF HAIR DO YOU LIKE ON THE OPPOSITE SEX?
Thick. Messy.

15. WHERE CAN YOU SEE YOURSELF BEING PROPOSED TO?
Drunkenly on a couch watching a movie.

16. DO YOU LIKE PORN?
Not in the way that it's intended, no. It can be pretty funny.

17. WHO IS THE LAST PERSON YOU MADE MAD?
Erick.

18. DO YOU SPEAK A DIFFERENT LANGUAGE?
Not enough of it.

19. WHAT WAS THE FIRST GIFT SOMEONE EVER GAVE YOU (OF THE OPPOSITE SEX)?
Hmmm. A Beach boys best of casette tape.

20. WOULD YOU FALL IN LOVE KNOWING THAT THE PERSON IS LEAVING?
Sigh.

21. WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO TELL SOMEONE HOW MUCH THEY MEAN TO YOU?
A mix tape. Or a plane ticket.

22. SAY A NUMBER FROM ONE TO A HUNDRED:
39

23. BLONDES, REDHEADS OR BRUNETTES?
Redheads. Only special ones though.

24. WHAT IS THE ONE NUMBER YOU CALL OFTEN?
08007695000 (then my pin number) then 001816204112...0

25. WHAT ANNOYS YOU MOST?
I'm with Sally on this one. People.

26. HAVE YOU EVER DONE A PRANK CALL?
I once called everyone in my phone book and asked them "if you weren't gay, would you love me?" but it wasn't a prank call, I was just *really* confused that night.

27. WHAT WERE YOU DOING BEFORE YOU FILLED OUT THIS SURVEY?
Eating a bacon sandwich and moving things out of my room so dad can rip the carpet up.

28. IF YOU COULD GET PLASTIC SURGERY, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Well I am going to get that eye fixing thing, but I'm not sure if that counts as plastic surgery. Otherwise... Hmmm.

29. WHY DID YOU FILL OUT THIS SURVEY?
Bored bored bored trying to avoid useful things or thinking.

30. WHAT DO YOU LIKE ON YOUR PIZZA?
Goat's cheese, rocket and jalapenos. In an ideal world.

31. WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF ALCOHOL BECAME ILLEGAL?
More drugs.

32. WHAT DO YOU WANT FOR YOUR BIRTHDAY?
A book of Lee Friendlander photos called letters from the people. And world peace.
.

Right, well, while I wait for certain people in certain timezones to be done with the sleep cycle of their days so I can maybe call them and berate myself, I shall take impotant online quizzes. Clearly more important than, say, doing anything constructive like getting gas and a phone line for my new flat, or drying out flood damaged things.

So. To the quizzes.

You Are Western Boots

Your boots can sure walk a long mile - but they're still chic!

What Kind of Boots Are You?

Your 80s Heartthrob Is

Kirk Cameron

Who's Your 80's Heartthrob?

7 things that scare you:
1. Big crowds in enclosed spaces. And open spaces. (Big crowds, then.)
2. Fires in big crowds.
3. Never really doing anything with myself
4. That my kids will never know my grandmother
5. Getting unhappy in the winter
6. Graphic descriptions of freak accidents
7. Being alone at night in the city, somewhere dark. (Sometimes. Sometimes it's wonderful)

7 things you like the most:
1. Waking up feeling positive
2. Fruit salad
3. Dresses
4. Finding lost things in the street
5. My closest friends (My brother and my boyfriend. How sad.)
6. Books that make you read all night but stop at the last ten pages because you don't want it to finish.
7. Seeing an idea come to fruition. And it being better than you thought.

7 random facts about you:
1. I used to have a very very sticky outy belly button.
2. My wrists ache a lot.
3. For 6 months when I was a kid, I refused to wear shoes.
4. I get worse hangovers than anyone else I know. But today I don't, which is nice.
5. I pick off the skin on my right thumb and eat it. I'm repulsive.
6. I am endlessly intrigued by images of the Virgin and Child.
7. I worry that growing up in a single parent family will make it hard to have successful relationships in the future.

7 things you plan to do before you die:
1. Open a cafe that serves only breakfast food. (Perfect soft eggs and coffee. Mmm.)
2. Sell clothes in a boutique that also sells cocktails.
3. Visit every European city on my list (it's long)
4. Become fluent in French
5. Do some good.
6. Be a teacher
7. Live in New York

7 things you can’t do:
1. Admit that I'm wrong.
2. Stop sneezing. Right now.
3. Make an omelette. Or spell one. How embarrassing.
7. Argue about something I really care about without crying. Which never helps my case.

7 things you can do:
1. Ugly drawings
2. Dance (in my own special, special way)
3. Waste time.
4.
So.

The past, and things. Will come back to haunt you. but probably in a good way. Today (tonight) two very different elements of past came back to haunt (dance with) me. All round, it was a good experience... but because I was all round kind of glum today, it felt strange.

Everything feels strange.

(I am currently dressed in home-school chic - denim smock - which erick wouldn't let me wear in the states.)

But there are ricicles. So it might be ok.

I keep messing up timezones. For the last hour I have sat here idling away minutes (well, eating a yummy breakfast and amusing myself with photos) til I could call erick and wake him up for work.

But that's 12pm American time. Not British time. Stupid stupid baffy.

Rainwater

Yesterday I got home from babysitting (getting paid $10/hour to sleep off my jet lag, a wonderous "job") to find my basement room immersed somewhat in the results of a rainstorm that afternoon.

It made me wish quite fervently that I made more of a habit of, say, not putting things on the floor when I am done with them. Particularly not things made of paper like big beautiful art books, adored paperbacks and bank statements.

Opening the paper this morning somewhat tempered my sulkiness about a few things being ruined though.

I don't know, everything's very strange at the moment.

Tonight my sister is leaving for Australia where she will be for at least six months. Next week or so I am moving out for the first time to my own place. My little brother sadly commented that he does not approve of "this dispersal."

I don't know.

(ps: I'm not sure I approve of these little emotion faces. As the blank one has a smile but everyone who has ever seen my face in action would know that my default face (blank, if you will,) has a turned down mouth.)

Blargh.

My mind has gone into Erick withdrawal.

And my tummy has gone into pizza withdrawal.

It is nice to be home, and nice to see the familiar ones. But I was starting to feel like I was at home in Kansas City. Sigh.

And (and!) things are so expensive here, I'd forgotten. I bought some groceries today, just dinner and some grapes and some milk, and it cost $26. Sigh.

I feel kind of hopeless and sad about the world today.

The only answer is to curl up in bed with a cup of tea.

Live Journal cherry-popping

Today has been sub-par all round.
Various reasons including a) my inability to cook an ommelette (an *ommelette!*
b) the rain
c) money (or lack thereof)
d) My last ever shift at the coffeehouse being schedule swapped so I had nothing to do all evening.
e) A sense of doom and despair and futility about logisitcs and the future and such.

Lights in the darkness, however have been:

a) The Half Price Book Store. Which is one of my favourite places in KC. I wandered there on my own this afternoon and found some great things - Birthday presents for my sister (a hefty slab of a book full of glossy pages and street photography, and a book of essays about the constructed reality of photography) and Badday presents for myself (a book of weegee photographs, and a little book about photomontage which is filled with someone else's highlighting and scribbling and so makes me even happier than the book alone would have.)

b) Sigmund.

c) This classified ad:
"PEEPING TOM WATCHING ME SHOWER To the girl who has been watching me shower and get ready in teh morning by looking through my window... I am leaving it open on purpose. Come over. Hope you like what you see."
Oh wow it makes an hour of trawling the classifieds entirely worth it.

d) I found two playing cards on the street today (2 of Clubs and 7 of hearts)
